Who is "the Green Man"?The Green Man represents irrepressible life. Often linked with the Christian origins of modern science. The Green Man is an ancient and very prevalent archetype - its presence can be found in folklore, religious art, and sacred architecture from the earliest times. For a long time it seems this symbol was suppressed. It has been suggested that with the Gaia hypothesis, in which there is the notion that the earth is a single living organism, namely the Great Mother(the female counterpart), there is also a second complementary aspect. This aspect is the male counterpart, the Green Man. He shows the unity that exists between man and vegetation, the secret governing laws of Nature, fertility, and the wild uncategorizable symmetry inherent in nature. He has many appearances, but in all of them, he universally is a symbol of renewal and continual rebirth - as is the prime function of nature. A description of Green Man type commonly found would be that of a green human head, immersed in foliage. Sometimes disgorging vegetation from his mouth, eyes, and ears, often enfolding his visage, so that what exactly he is made up of is somewhat uncertain. Thus illustrating the unity, the viewer unable to discern what is truly human and what is not points to one of the main messages of this archetype - composite unity. "Man is of nature, venturing from it, and will eventually return." He is not unlike the unicorn, griffin or centaur. Their multi-facet meanings are structured along similar lines: the unicorn being a composite of a horse with the spiral tusk of the narwal, and symbolizing spiritual knowledge - a unicorn will only submit to a virgin, thus bespeaking purity; a griffin, composited of a lion and eagle, guards treasure, including secret mysteries; the centaur is the amalgamation of a man and a horse, and brings with it the tutelage of heros, training a man in courage. item # MM-FB149 $23.99 |
